replacement for esva

i’ve been happy user of ESVA / global-domination [virtual in my case] appliance for mail and antivirus filtering. unfortunately it seems that was one-man project and it’s pretty much dead by now. official website – http://www.global-domination.org/ no longer works since ~ march 2010.

i updated clamav using yum to get it working after definition updates were denied for versions below 0.95, but it’s high time to look around for something else.

one of possible alternatives is mailcleaner. at their forums you can find reasonably fresh beta version based on debian lenny [which is good]. i like ESVA better – especially it’s reporting / archive abilities but spam-filtering-feature-wise both seem to have similar capabilities. probably in few months time will come to say goodbye to ESVA server.

2010-08-08 PS. esva seems to be alive again, 2.0.6.0 is out.

2011-12-15 PSS. it seems that esva got a little bit more alive – there’s 2.0.6.1 out at esvacommunity.com but i decided to move away from it. all in all it was pretty good product with simple yet powerful gui but i dont want to risk running project that does not get regular updates. i’ve rebuilt my mail filtering server based on on this tutorial. i used debian’s amavis to avoid re-compiling in the future.

    1. no… i’m about to phase esva out and will replace it with custom-built mail filter based on http://www200.pair.com/mecham/spam/. i’ve been running it for few weeks to get good idea how to whitelist etc. it’ll be less of a black box for me, giving more control [but also not providing any gui but that’s ok for me].
