debian on dell poweredge 13th gen – r630

i’ve received for testing a new dell r630. before buying few of those i wanted to make sure that debian wheezy has kernel including all the needed drivers. it seems that it has.

i’ve used firmware-7.6.0-amd64-netinst.iso from https://wiki.debian.org/Firmware – assuming that non-free firmware for the broadcom card may be needed but when i look at the list of installed packages – it seems that even the regular debian installer should have worked.

so far i’ve tested:

• the Broadcom Gigabit Ethernet BCM5720 network cards – since /lib/firmware is empty i’m guessing the quad-port card could have worked with the ‘normal’ / free debian installer as well.
• storage
  • the PERC H730P raid controller works fine with debian wheezy. during the installation i had to manually point that GRUB should be installed on sdb instead of sda, which is probably related to the fact that i was booting from a virtual ISO via the DRAC8 card
  • MegaCli64 [ proprietary LSI’s command line tool for monitoring and managing the hardware raids ] – works without problems.
  • 2.5″ caddies from dell r620 work fine with r630, intel s3500 SSD seems to work fine with h730p
• the DRAC8 card sadly does not work in chrome, but seems to work with IE11. feels familiarly sluggish. and it hanged – damn it. they always do. i managed to kill it with single run of ipmitool over the network. after upgrading the DRAC firmware to 2.01.00.01 – “ipmitool -I lanplus -L USER -H $1 -U $2 -P $3 sel elist last 10”, “ipmitool -I lanplus -L USER -H $1 -U $2 -P $3 sdr” seem to work fine.
