esxi 6.0: “create virtual machine snapshot” “a general system error occurred”

i’ve upgraded from esxi 5.5 to 6.0 a couple of servers. soon after i’ve discovered that ghettoVCB would fail on some of VMs while it worked fine on the others.

i’ve started poking around and found out that for those VMs where backup failed i creation of snapshot would fail with the following error:

esxi - failed snapshot

while in /var/log/hostd.log:

2015-10-31T16:59:11.285Z warning hostd[51B03B70] [Originator@6876 sub=Vmsvc.vm:/vmfs/volumes/532f2221-922224d0-90e8-d4a222b22b28/server0/server0.vmx] Snapshot::GetFile failed: A required file was not found
2015-10-31T16:59:11.286Z warning hostd[51B03B70] [Originator@6876 sub=Vmsvc.vm:/vmfs/volumes/532f2221-922224d0-90e8-d4a222b22b28/server0/server0.vmx] Failed to get snapshot files: One of the parameters is invalid

that led me to checking content of server.vmx0 where i’ve found reference to no longer available ISO file. i’ve removed the VM from the inventory, re-added it, removed the dangling snapshots [ it was not visible earlier ] and reconfigured VM’s DVD drive not to refer to non-existing ISO file. problem solved, backups and ghettoVCB work again : ]
